The 6 mile section of the Birch River from Cora Brown Bridge to Herald Bridge is an easy way to start whitewater kayaking. Personally rated class I-II+ at 5′, but at 6 ‘ it could be rated at II-III. An easy put in is on the upstream side of the bridge on river right. A small parking spot is on the down stream side on river right. The section below Herald Bridge brings a higher challenge as that is when that the class III rapids kick in. If you do run the section below the bridge you will need permission to take out as it is mostly, if not all private property. Taking out at the bridge is easy and in the past we were invited by the campground owner to take out on his property.
